Floating styrofoam krathongs in our rivers and lakes every year just doesn’t make sense anymore. This is the first year that we decided to ban all plastic, styrofoam and non-biodegradable offerings in lieu of our single-use plastic ban at Sampran Riverside, which started on the 1st of November 2018.

Krathongs made at Sampran Riverside were made of only compostable materials like banana trunks and leaves.

Traditionally, Loy Krathong is a festival to worship the river goddess by floating our offerings in bodies of water. Over time, natural krathongs became cheap styrofoam ones, which meant that we were floating tonnes of rubbish in our waterways every year.
This is not the best way to give thanks to one of our most valuable resources, so we encouraged our guests to celebrate this beautiful tradition the old way, with banana trunk krathongs.

We host Loy Krathong festivals every year at Sampran Riverside.

This year’s festival was also special because we banned all single-use plastics. We had a water refill station for all our guests, and showcased a few creative ways to drink in a more eco way! We can all make a difference by how we decide to live more sustainably. Thank you to all our guests who came to support and celebrate with us. See you next Loy Krathong!
